Ha’Penny Bridge
The Story Behind the Space
The Ha’penny Bridge is a very old and famous walking bridge in Dublin, Ireland. It was built in 1816 to help people cross the River Liffey safely. Before the bridge, people had to use small boats called ferries to go from one side of the river to the other.
The bridge was first called the Wellington Bridge, but everyone started calling it the Ha’penny Bridge because people had to pay half a penny (a tiny coin) each time they crossed it. After many years, that fee was stopped in 1919 and people could walk across for free.
The bridge is made of iron and looks very pretty with its curved shape. Lots of people walk over it every day and it is one of Dublin’s most well-known landmarks.
