Trinity College
The Story Behind the Space
Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I and is the oldest university in Ireland. It was established to promote Protestant education in Dublin, following the model of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
For much of its early history, Trinity College primarily served the Protestant Ascendancy, and Catholics were largely excluded until the late 18th century. Over time, the college became more inclusive and evolved into a leading center for education, research, and intellectual life in Ireland.
Trinity College played an important role in Irish cultural, political, and scientific development. Many of Ireland’s most influential figures studied or worked there, including writers, scientists, and political leaders.
Today, Trinity College Dublin is an internationally respected university, known for its academic excellence and historic campus in the heart of Dublin. One of its most famous landmarks is the Old Library, which houses the Book of Kells, a medieval manuscript that attracts visitors from around the world.
